"Our IT Vision is to put in place an accelerated digitization ecosystem to enable socio-economic development, to expand knowledge-based economy and to spur the economic growth."
Anusha Rehman Khan, Minister of State for IT
The rapid adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is immensely important for the socio-economic development of any country. In the spirit of democratic governance, revolutionary polices and visionary approach, present government’s main focus is to enhance the growth of Pakistan’s economy. The efforts are paying off as the IT industry is growing in terms of the number of companies, revenue, exports and workforce every year. Pakistan’s IT exports have increased by more than 11 times over the last decade thereby demonstrating clear confidence in the ability of the local companies to deliver IT solutions and services which meet expectations of foreign clients.
I am pleased to inform you that with more than 2000 software houses and call centers at present, Pakistan’s IT industry is now a well-established IT services provider to the largest, most reputable entities in the world. Many Pakistani IT companies have world’s largest companies amongst their clients including Halliburton®, Motorola®, GE®, BMW®, Toyota®, Daimler Chrysler®, AT&T® and many more. Many of our IT companies are certified in quality standards including ISO 9000, ISO 27001, and CMMI at present and this number is growing every year. You might find it interesting to note that according to Upwork, a site for freelancing work, Pakistan ranks fourth globally in terms of total number of registered freelancers as well as total earnings by these freelancers.
Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) - a government entity under Ministry of IT -- is responsible for ensuring growth of local IT industry and has already launched different initiatives to promote gaming and animation mobile applications development. The applications developed by Pakistani developers have achieved top rankings and downloads on app stores of Apple®, Google®, and Blackberry®. For instance, Cricket Power TM, a game developed by a local IT company, was selected as the Official Game of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, an event watched by over a billion people. A locally developed Photo Editor reached number one spot on Blackberry’s App World®. Several apps developed for the iPhone® platform have also reached top spots on Apple’s App Store®. Since 2010, 25 Pakistani IT companies have won gold or silver awards at Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Awards (APICTA) in different categories including startup, mobile applications, e-learning, e-health, e-government, security, supply chain management, communications, and financial applications. These achievements are a reflection of the high end expertise of the IT companies of Pakistan. Pakistan itself as a market for people centric mobile based applications and products is ready for the next level of development with state-of-the-art and ubiquitous connectivity structure through fixed & mobile networks having a remarkable teledensity of more than 67% .
I invite you to consider Pakistan’s IT industry for investment and outsourcing at substantial annual cost savings but with the same IT service quality and standards as in other countries and to capitalize on the economic growth in the local economy.
